This might of course just be a coincidence, but The Boggles frequently tell a yarn about an incident which happened in the quaint old Lincolnshire village of Haxey. It occurred sometime in the 1500's. Tellins very great, great uncle Clam was traveling through that area when he caught sight of a group of men chasing after a brightly colored hat or hood. One of them managed to grab hold of the garment and then return it to a lady who was sitting on horse nearby.
Maybe, just maybe this, explains the game and tradition known today as the Haxey Hood. This year the event takes place in January. For more information visit the axholme
The person in charge of the event is known as the Lord of the Hood. The assistants are called 'Boggins' (not 'Boggles' as Tellins would have you believe. But there is a character known as 'The Fool' though.
