Celebrated in some villages in Somerset Punkie Night is an old custom celebrated on the last Thursday in October. This year it is on the 3oth of October. Children carry their 'punkies' (lanterns or 'jack o'lantern') around singing a song. click here to play the song on The Shellies music balloons.
The lantern can be made from a pumpkin, a large turnip or a mangold wurzel, which has had it's top cut off and has then been hollowed out, with designs cut in the outer skin.Lastly a candle is placed placed inside it and lit.
This year there will be a punkie party at Hinton St George, Somerset - village centre starting at Village Hall.
